the pleasure of an evening bird walk. Dinner and overnight at the camp
site.
The Nyahururu Falls also known as Thomson Falls was named after Joseph
Thomson who walked from Mombasa to Lake Victoria in the early 1880s;
these falls are shaped by the waters of the Ewaso Narok River and plunge
over 72m into a rift, spraying the dark forest below.
In the spectacular Lake Bogoria; hot springs and geysers are the main
attractions. The lake has been called ‘the new home of the flamingo’
with a nomad population of up to two million birds. For the bird enthusiasts,
Kesubo swamp located north of the park is home to more than 200 species
of birds.
Lake Baringo is the most Northerly of Kenya’s small Rift Valley lakes;
creased with papyrus and well developed acacia forest. Hippos, crocodiles
and monitor lizards are effortlessly seen from the shore, as is a magnificent
display of water birds. This is Kenya's bird watching centre with over
1200 different species native to the country and more than 450 sighted
here. A bird watcher's haven but beware, this is malaria land so it
is best to come prepared with plenty of mosquito repellent.
Day 4: Lake Baringo- Nakuru National Park
We enjoy a morning boat ride in search of hippo, crocodile, and fish
eagle. After a sumptuous lunch, we then proceed to Lake Nakuru and the
Nakuru National Park for an afternoon game drive.
The park covers 180 sq km and is home to warthogs, waterbuck, buffaloes,
reedbucks, and the occasional leopard. White and black rhinos were introduced
to the park some years ago and you will find white rhino at the southern
end. The park has also retained its reputation as an ornithologists’
delight with more than 400 species of bird found here. We spend the
night at Kembu campsite just outside of town.
Day 5 – Masai Mara National Reserve
After an early breakfast, we depart for Masai Mara National Reserve
via the Great Rift Valley arriving in time for lunch at the Campsite/or
at Narok. We then proceed on an afternoon game drive returning to the
campsite for a delicious sundowner, and dinner at the campsite.
The Mara reserve is 1510 sq km of incredible wide-open landscapes and
fertile riverine woodland and one glimpse is enough to explain its appeal;
it is typical savannah, with a mass of amazing wildlife. Wherever you
go in the Mara you will see a frequent amount of wildlife such as Masai
giraffe, baboons, warthogs, bat eared foxes, grey jackals, spotted hyena,
topis, impala, hartebeests, wildebeest. Elephants, buffaloes, zebras
and hippos also exist in great numbers. It is also common to see lions
either basking after a heavy meal, or surveying the plains for their
next meal. Cheetahs and leopards are harder to spot but are still reasonably
common.
Day 6 – Masai Mara National Reserve
Whole day shall be spent viewing game, in the early morning hours and
in the evening as this is when we have the best chances of seeing wildlife.
While in Masai Mara there are optional activities that you can participate
in at an extra cost e.g. a visit to Maasai Manyatta/homestead or an
early morning balloon flight over the Mara plains. All meals and overnight
at the campsite.
Day 7: Masai Mara - Naivasha.Elsamere Field Study Centre.
The Field Study Centre was established in 1989. The centre's mission
is to make environmental awareness and development education available
to all the people.
It’s part of The Elsa Conservation Trust established in 1963 by Joy
and George Adamson, their work in conservation. Joy Adamson is the author
of the “Born Free”.
Take lunch here watch a video about the Adamsons work in conservation
then at an extra cost you can have a boat ride at lake Naivasha to view
the hippos and the different species of birdlife. Lake Naivasha is the
only fresh water lake in Rift Valley. Spend the night at Fish Eagle
Camp or equivalent.
Day 8: Naivasha Hell’s Gate national park.
After breakfast at the camp depart for Hell’s Gate National Park is
one of the only parks in Kenya that permits walking. Famous for its
natural hot geysers, eagle and vulture breeding grounds. Driving, walking,
camping, cycling and rock climbing can be enjoyed within the park. The
park has a wide variety of game including a large number of raptors
and the scenery is quite spectacular. All meals and overnight at campsite.
Day 9: Naivasha – Amboseli.
Early breakfast then depart for Amboseli via Nairobi with lunch enroute.
Amboseli is a very delicate and beautiful ecosystem, submitted to great
seasonal changes.
The overall sensation is of a dry land, actually annual rainfalls are
scarce, ranging from 350-400mm. The Northwestern area is occupied by
the dry bed of the Amboseli Lake, which for a large part of the year
is nothing but a huge frying pan covered within shattered saline earth
populated with dusty whirlwinds. The mirages blend with the herds of
zebra and wildbeest that traverse the scalding plain one after the other,
crestfallen and with a weary and lost look.
Despite the first impression of a land that is dusty with little or
no rainfall, in reality, Amboseli is overflowing with water throughout
the year, but under the ground. The snows of mount Kilimanjaro melt
and flow downhill thus supporting flora and fauna in Amboseli.
Day 10: Amboseli.
Spend the whole day exploring The park is known for its wildlife, especially
it's prolific elephant population. Amboseli also hosts the big cats,
herbivores and numerous bird species including flamingo and a variety
of plains game.
Day 11: Amboseli – Nairobi.
Depart for Nairobi after early morning gamedrive and breakfast. Arrive
Nairobi by lunchtime. Transfer to the airport for your flight home if
its an early afternoon flight and if it’s a night flight after lunch
visit the National Museum a 10 minutes drive from the city centre. It’s
a good place to understand Kenyan heritage and appreciate it.
