Historic Island and Giant Tortoises
Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, lies a short boat ride from Stone Town and combines colonial history, coastal scenery and a sanctuary for giant Aldabra tortoises. The island was once planned as a prison and later used as a quarantine station.
Today, visitors explore the old structures, walk among the giant tortoises and enjoy views back toward Zanzibar City. Some tortoises are more than a century old, and local guides explain their care and the island’s conservation programme.
When sea conditions permit, the excursion may include swimming or snorkeling near the island before returning to Stone Town.
